Experiencing abuse can deeply affect every part of life. You may feel fear, shame, self-blame, or numbness. Memories might resurface unexpectedly, or you may feel disconnected from your body and emotions. It can be hard to trust others, or even yourself, after betrayal and harm. Healing from abuse takes time, patience, and a sense of safety.

Our therapists offer trauma-informed, compassionate support that moves at your pace. Together, we create a safe space to process your experiences, rebuild a sense of security, and reconnect with your body and emotions. Through grounding tools, somatic awareness, and narrative work, we help you regain control of your story and rediscover your strength and worth.

At Rise & Shine Counselling & Wellness, we're here to walk beside you on your mental health journey.

Recognizing Signs of Abuse

Control & Power

Abuse often involves ongoing patterns of power, control, and coercion where one person limits another’s independence, choices, finances, communication, or access to support. These dynamics may be subtle at first and can escalate over time.

Emotional Harm

Emotional abuse can include gaslighting, criticism, blame, intimidation, or manipulation that undermines self-esteem and creates confusion, self-doubt, or shame. These behaviours are often minimized or dismissed, yet can be deeply harmful.

Boundary Violations

Consistently ignoring physical, emotional, sexual, or relational boundaries—despite clear discomfort, refusal, or expressed needs—is a common indicator of abuse. Healthy relationships respect consent and personal limits.

Fear & Hypervigilance

Feeling afraid, constantly on edge, or walking on eggshells around someone can indicate an unsafe or abusive dynamic. This may include worrying about how the other person will react or adjusting your behaviour to avoid conflict or punishment.

Our abuse recovery services provide compassionate support to help you heal from emotional, physical, or psychological harm. Using evidence-based strategies, we guide you in processing past experiences, rebuilding healthy boundaries, strengthening coping skills, and restoring a sense of safety and emotional well-being.
